Who We Are
ASSISTANCE LEAGUE of Santa Barbara is one of 109 chapters of NATIONAL
ASSISTANCE LEAGUE®. With its auxiliary Las Aletas, the chapter has
a combined membership numbering over 300. Members of this nonprofit, all
volunteer service organization, identify, develop, implement, and fund
the following projects in order to serve the specific needs of children
and adults in the greater Santa Barbara area.
PHILANTHROPIES
- HILLSIDE HOUSE: A residential home for 59 persons with Cerebral
Palsy or brain injuries. Generous financial support and various activities
are provided by members.
- OPERATION SCHOOL BELL® and TEEN SCHOOL BELL: During the
year 2002-2003, we provided 1370 area children in need with appropriate
new clothing for the school year.
- FAMILY LEARNING PROGRAM: Provides tutoring, mentoring, assistance
and support to children and their families in reading, math, other homework
assignments and additional enrichment activities.
- FUN IN THE SUN: During June 2003, ALSB provided appropriate
new clothing for 259 disadvantaged children chosen to attend summer
day camp.
- Bear HUGS: During the year 2002-2003, ALSB provided 550 teddy
bears to local agencies for comfort to injured or traumatized children
and adults.
- THE LITTLE COTTAGE: Offers housing for out-of-area families,
355 during the year 2002-2003, in need whose relatives are in the hospital.
- V.I.P. (Very Improved Performers): Hosts luncheons honoring
middle school students that have shown improvement in attendance, attitude
and citizenship.
- FRIENDSHIP LUNCHEONS: During the year 2002-2003, ALSB provided
lunch and entertainment to 350 local senior citizens.
- FOSTERING FRIENDS: Offers mentoring and assistance to young
adults leaving the foster care system.
- OPERATION BOOK SHELF: Provides library service to shut-ins.
- KIDS ON THE BLOCK: During the year 2002-2003, puppet programs
designed to raise awareness in dealing with current issues were performed
for 1557 local elementary school children.
